Our drivers travel hundreds of thousands of miles, locally as well as across the United States, and they have a history of helping others along the way. For one driver, what he recently saw on a trip made him stop and take action.
Check out the story below that has earned John Tidwell recognition as a recent Driver of the Month for the local North Georgia fleet:
It was the early hours of the morning on May 15, and local driver John Tidwell was traveling on state highway 72, taking a trailer to Huntsville, Alabama, when he a came across a strange scene. A pick-up truck was stopped on the side of the road, and although it was dark, he could see a man underneath the truck, frantically waving his arms.
"There's always risk in stopping to help a motorist, particularly in the middle of the night, but John didn't let that stop him when he saw someone in distress," Transportation Manager Matt West, said.
John pulled over a short distance ahead, called 9-1-1 and walked back to the scene to see what was going on. He found that the driver had earlier gotten out of his truck but had forgotten to put it in park, so the truck knocked him over and the rear wheel rolled forward pinning him beneath.
The driver was yelling, "Get it off of me." Although John was concerned that he could injure the driver even more, the man continued to plead, so he got into the truck and eased it forward enough for the man to escape. Amazingly, the man's injuries were minor, but John stayed with him until Emergency Medical Services arrived.
"We are proud of drivers like John whose concern for safety extends to other travelers on the road," Matt said.
