Creativity. Passion. Psychology.
A lot goes into successfully launching an innovative new product that overcomes the natural human tendency to resist change.
Few people know that better than Sr. Product Director Phil Stoner. During his 17 years with Mohawk and nearly four decades in the industry, he’s played an integral role in launching revolutionary products like SmartStrand and Air.o.
“In 1980, there were more than 300 carpet manufacturers, and now we’re basically down to three major players, which has dramatically changed the competitive landscape,” he said. “At Mohawk, we’ve taken innovation to a whole new level, so our product management teams have been charged with capitalizing on the success of those innovations and using that differentiation to bring in sales. Every year we’re asking ourselves ‘How can we make it better than last year, and what are we going to do to take this launch to the next level?’”
For Phil, the 2019 market season, which kicks off today, is shaping up to be a memorable one. This will be his last time introducing new products to the market. He will retire at the end of March.
“During his time at Mohawk, Phil has been a valued contributor in the roles of National Marketing Manager for Builder Programs, Director Market Development and, most recently, as Senior Product Director, leading our EverStrand and Forever Fresh polyester product lines,” Vice President Product Management Jamie Welborn said. “Phil has been a dedicated and passionate advocate for Mohawk and helped grow polyester into a significant portion of the residential business. He has been invaluable to the company and our continued success.”
There are a lot of great memories to look back on, but Phil said what stands out most from his career is the people he’s met along the way.
“The number of fantastic people I’ve met over the years – intelligent people who have helped me along my way and challenged my growth – is truly remarkable,” he said. “I feel lucky to have known them and to have been a part of so many incredible product launches over the years.”
